What makes a natural spice blend “natural”? (And why Nature Kitchen skips preservatives)
If you cook at home a lot, you have probably stood in front of a spice aisle wondering what “natural” actually means on a jar. It is a fair question. The word gets used a lot. Clear answers help you choose a blend you are happy to tip into dinner.
Here is how we think about it at Nature Kitchen — and why our pots skip preservatives.
What “natural” should mean in a spice blend
For us, a natural spice blend is simple:
- It is made from herbs and spices you would recognise in a kitchen
- It is not padded with flour or cheap fillers
- It has no artificial colours or flavours added for show
- The ingredient list is short enough that you can read it in a few seconds
In other words: flavour for cooking, not a long chemistry set.
Nature Kitchen blends are all-natural and gluten-free. We grind and mix in small batches, then pack into stackable pots that keep well in a cool, dry cupboard.
Why we skip preservatives
Preservatives are useful in many foods that need a long, wet shelf life. Dried herbs and spices are different. Kept cool, dry and sealed, they hold flavour for a good long while without them.
So we leave preservatives out. Our blends are herbs and spices only — no preservatives and no artificial additives. That keeps the taste clean for stews, curries, BBQ, roast veg and midweek trays.
You will still see a best-before date on the pot. That is about peak flavour, not a “must add preservatives” rule. Pop the lid back on, keep the pot away from steam, and use a dry spoon.
What we also leave out
Alongside skipping preservatives, Nature Kitchen blends have:
- No MSG
- No palm oil
- No flour fillers (our blends are gluten-free — always check the label on each pot)
That is the same standard across our seasonings, rubs, single spices and 9-pot gift boxes.
How to spot a blend you can trust
When you compare brands, look for:
- A clear ingredient list (herbs and spices you recognise)
- An honest “no preservatives / no artificial additives” line — not just the word “natural” on its own
- Gluten-free stated when flour is not used as a pad
- Cooking guidance that matches real meals, not vague wellness claims
We stick to culinary talk: how a blend tastes and what to cook with it. Great flavour on the plate is the goal.
